Resulting from the repeated destruction by fire of parts of the Forbidden City of ancient Nanjing, the name for what today is Beijing, the Chinese people of the Ming Dynasty lost countless books, works of art and calligraphy, and other treasures and found themselves in an almost constant state of reconstruction.

I don't know how you guys figured the answer to be E. None of the choices make any sense

I guess they mean 'repeated destruction of parts of forbidden city by fire' by this - 'repeated destruction by fire of parts of the Forbidden City'

IMO E.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Would it be possible for you to post the original question? Sometimes questions altered in order to create a "new" question need not necessarily be correct
