Kaplan practice test question: verb tenses

by nobazinga » Thu Oct 18, 2012 2:01 pm
Question from Kaplan Practice test:
The Limón Dance Company believes that, since the death of José Limón in 1972, they have and will continue to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey, who both choreographed works in the company's active repertory.

a- they have and will continue to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey,
b- they have and will continue to perpetuate Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey's shared artistic vision,
c- it has and will continue to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey,
d- it has perpetuated and will continue perpetuating the artistic vision that Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey shared,
e- it has continued to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey,

Answer: E

Explaination:
Choices (A), (B), and (C) can be eliminated because one cannot use "have" or "has" with "to perpetuate."

Choice (D) correctly uses "has perpetuated and will continue perpetuating," but this solution is too wordy. Choice (D) also causes a modification problem with the clause "who both choreographed . . ." by placing "shared" at the end of the underlined portion.

Answer Choice (E) is correct because it more concisely states the same thing as choice (D) and does not move "shared."

I can't understand why C is wrong. According to explaination, C has wrong verb tenses with "to perpetuate". It is still not clear to me. Need some more explaination.

has/have are part of present-perfect-tense and need "perpetuated" but c) does not contain this word.

e) changes meaning as it does not focus on future action but is correct because of other reasons.

anyway this question is rip-off from gmatprep's below question:
If the proposed expenditures for gathering information abroad are reduced even further, international news reports have been and will continue to diminish in number and quality.
(A) have been and will continue to diminish
(B) have and will continue to diminish
(C) will continue to diminish, as they already did,
(D) will continue to diminish, as they have already,
(E) will continue to diminish

Conclusion : Press the Thanks Button ;)

a- they have and will continue to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey, - plural they with singular noun company

b- they have and will continue to perpetuate Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey's shared artistic vision, - plural they with singular noun company

c- it has and will continue to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey, - I would break up the has and will continue and you might see the error - has to perpetuate and will continue to perpetuate

d- it has perpetuated and will continue perpetuating the artistic vision that Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey shared, Modifier error

e- it has continued to perpetuate the shared artistic vision of Limón and his mentor and collaborator Doris Humphrey, - Perfect. In present perfect form and no modifier error
