Based on the recent box office receipts, the public's appetite for documentary films, like nonfiction books, seems to be on the rise.

(A) like nonfiction books
(B) as nonfiction books
(C) as its interest in nonfiction books
(D) like their interest in nonfiction books
(E) like its interest in nonfiction books

the public's appetite for documentary films, like _______ ? You can get the answer easily now. The comparison will be clear if you remove unnecessary prepositional phrases

A - public's appetite is compared to nonfiction books - wrong in terms of quantity and what are compared.
B/C - usage of as is wrong here as we are comparing nouns
D - 'their' - public is a collective noun and is singular

IMO E.

Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Spot on, sam.

Since like is used, we should be comparing 2 nouns. These two nouns should be parallel. That is all that's required to answer this question. I like this question for incorporating two concepts (Parallelism and Pronouns).

-> 'public's appetite' is parallel to 'its interest'
-> 'its interest' is a correctly used possessive pronoun as it addresses possessive noun 'public's appetite'
