In the years since the city of London imposed strict air-pollution regulations on local industry, the number of bird species seen in and around London has increased dramatically. Similar air-pollution rules should be imposed in other major cities.

Each of the following is an assumption made in the argument above EXCEPT:

(A) In most major cities, air-pollution problems are caused almost entirely by local industry.
(B) Air-pollution regulations on industry have a significant impact on the quality of the air.
(C) The air-pollution problems of other major cities are basically similar to those once suffered by London.
(D) An increase in the number of bird species in and around a city is desirable.
(E) The increased sightings of bird species in and around London reflect an actual increase in the number of species in the area.

IMO C.

If the air pollution problems of other cities are not similar to the those suffered by London, then air pollution rules imposed in London, cannot be imposed in other cities.

Mani_mba,

we need to find which is not an assumption.
You explanation is justifying C to be an assumption :)

OA is A

But I picked D.

City of London imposed air pollution rules on LOCAL industry - > air quality improved. Hence other cities should similar rules.

In A - > while not a perfect assumption is still needed. If the air pollution problems are not caused by local industry ..what good the regulations do ?

On the other hand D - doesn't support or weaken the conlusion. While the number of birds is an indicator of iproved air quality. Nothing is assumed abot it;s desitable or not so desirable effect.

OA I believe is wrong.

Why did you guys picked A ?

In all honesty OA is wrong : You are asked to pick an option that is not an assumption.

B should be it - because there is no reference to air quality anywhere in the argument. It seems like the only logical 'non assumption'

I totally agree with you.
Even I picked B. Nothing has been mentioned which can make you think that he is making some assumption about air quality.

why not D? desirability has nothing to do with the argument, right?

I think A is the best in this case
