Quit Job

by shuvayan » Sun Feb 23, 2014 7:02 am
Hi,

I am an Indian IT professional with 4 years of experience and I have recently quit my job as I felt I was not developing there(not learning anything new) and also I did not want to wait for 9-10 years to get to the management level, where the real decisions are made(we developers just do what we are told to).I plan on taking GMAT by August and get into a B School in INDIA(ISB) by Dec'14.I know the decision I have taken can be a setback but I was just not willing to drag on with the job just for money.I want to know what I can do to enhance my profile during this break.I have considered taking some online courses on Finance etc.

Hey there - you're not the first person to have quit their jobs for that reason. However, what you do in the next 6 months will pretty much make or break your app. Signing up for courses is fine but you can't just have a professional gap that long without a really good plug. Classes are not a substitute for professional experience nor will they adequately address employment gaps.

For example, we had a client who quit their job just like you did but they went off and started a company with someone else who also quit at the same time. HOWEVER - the reason this story worked was because we were able to tie his previous experience to his start up to his MBA to his post-MBA plans. Don't just go launch a company for the sake of it. This was just an example.

There are a few options open to you but understand you're behind the 8 ball here. You're going to lack up to date recommendations, potentially have a glaring hole in your resume, and also have something to explain that'll attract significant scrutiny.

Let me know if you have questions - we're happy to help you think things through and walk through your options.

Cheers!

Hey Bhavik,

Thanks a lot.I have plans to do some NGO work like teaching voluntarily. As per joining another company now, that cannot be done as every company has bond periods and I really do not want to join IT as a coder anymore. So what are the other options I can try.Opening my own company is what I want to do,but after I complete MBA.
