HI my name is gaurav ahuja. I recently gave the gmat and secured 680 on the gmat. I have an undergrad gpa of 3.9. work experience of about 24 months in hotels but at the front desk doing night audit and customer service. Is that considered a clerical work experience and will it prohibit me from getting into some good B-school? Can someone please suggest me some good B-schools suiting my profile for MBA in finance
Hello,
Thanks for sharing. Your work experience is definitely non-traditional and somewhat less competitive for top programs. The reason is because you likely had very little leadership experience in the roles you were in, and that is one of the core qualities the ad coms are evaluating you on. I think it will be somewhat tough to get into a top program given your profile, but not impossible. I think that if you were to have a shot, you'd have to have a much stronger career narrative (front desk clerk to financier does not an intuitive story make!), would have to show very strong leadership outside of work, and would have to show strong community/extracurricular activities. It would also help if you could break 700 mark on the GMAT...
So, a top school is a long shot. I might suggest Cornell though - if you can weave a story around hospitality/finance career goal, they'd be a great fit (really strong hospitality management program), might value your industry experience more than other programs. You could also try for NYU. I'd also add safer options to the list like UNC, Georgetown, etc.
Good luck!
