Profile Evaluation Help

by trente » Tue Sep 18, 2012 4:18 pm
Hi,

I am a 28 year old Hispanic Male from Southern California, below you'll find my profile. I'm in the process of deciding which schools to apply to but am having trouble deciding where I will be a good candidate given my low GPA. I'm hoping the rest of my profile and my GMAT score will help mitigate that performance. With a crooked GPA and GMAT score, I don't think I can reliably gauge the outlook on my own. Would Fuqua/Ross/Darden be out of the question? If so, what are some more reasonable target schools?

Academics

GMAT 720 (44v, 46Q)

2.5 GPA, Economics Princeton (4 Year Varsity Sport, and 15 hr/week working)

Took one year off after graduation to pursue sport professionally, then began career.

Work History: 5 Years working in corporate finance in pharmaceuticals industry. Have progressed in seniority though I have changed companies twice to achieve promotions. I am now a Senior Analyst for Latin America region.(fluent english, spanish, and proficient portuguese).

Service: 2 years as Exec Committee member for an organization serves at risk students at under-performing schools. My role is twofold, to serve as a mentor and to raise funds for the organization. Over two years, have organized events to increase mentor memberships and donations.

Thanks,

Hi there,

Your GPA is quite low, but I do think the rest of your profile could compensate for it and tip the scale in your favor. Duke, Darden, Ross are possibilities, but I would advise that you add some safer options since the GPA makes you a bit of a wildcard candidate. Definitely address the GPA in an optional statement... maybe enroll in a stats or accounting course to show you can do well in an academic setting. Have your recommenders point out your analytic capability. These things should help!

Best of luck,
Mili

Hi Mili,

Thanks so much for the response. What would you consider safe options, would UNC, UCLA, or possibly Emory fall into that category? If you have any other suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Best

Hi,

Yes, I think those would be safer options. I do think you'll be able to compensate for the GPA given that you were at Princeton and have a decent reason for why you weren't focused on academics. Still, you never know, so better safe than sorry!

Best,
Mili
