" that " is never used to refer to people, "who" is always preferred

As far as i read ( i guess its the last point in Sahil's notes -> in resources for sentence correction section" ) it says
Who is used for individuals
That for group

here we are talking of a group i.e. a family ... hence it should be That ??

correct me if i am wrong

B)... story of a young girl and her family that were hidden by a gentile Dutch couple during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, though they were eventually discovered

Note "that" here is a restrictive modifier and modifies only "family". The sentence seems to imply” story of a young girl and her particular family which was hidden.. as if the girl had many families, the one that was hidden is referred to here".

The intended meaning is the girl together with her family was hidden.

In D… story of a young girl and her family who were hidden… “who” refers to (the girl and her family)

Also D maintains parallelism

who were hidden by a gentile Dutch couple during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands but (who) were eventually discovered

Just making sure... but whom wasn't used here since this refers to the subject of the sentence, right?
