Can I use "who" for the following sentence?

The number of boys who are going to the cinema has jumped by 20%.

"who" can only refer to a person. In this sentence, I suppose that "who" is referring to "number". Therefore I am not sure, whethere "who" is correct.

The who pronoun is a noun modifier and modifies the noun closest to it . Logically speaking , number cant go to watch a movie . A number is just a number

who is being used over here for the boys and who can refer to plural nouns

so you cannot say

the number {Of X} who are

it will be

The number {of x} who is

I don't agree with venmic.
'The number who is' is incorrect. we can't use who for the number. and if we are using
'the number of boys who is going...' i still think 'is' is incorrect.
Can't it be: The number of boys going to the cinema has jumped by 20%??

Nopes the correct sentence would be

the number of boys who are going to the cinema has jumped by 20%.

for the number we have used the verb has and who is modifying boys therefore verb are
