Danny and Ian are munching on a jar full of candies. Had Danny eaten alone it would have taken him 5 minutes to finish the candies in the jar. Had Ian eaten alone it would have taken him 10 minutes to finish half the jar.

Since both of them are eating simultaneously, how long would it take them to empty the jar?

My method:

Danny- 1/5 of the jar in 1 minute
Ian- 1/10 of the jar in 1 minute

Together= 3/10

3/10*t=1

t= 10/3

10/3= wrong.

What am I doing wrong?

You are wrong at assuming Ian eats the full jar in 10 minutes, whereas the stem says Ian eats only half the jar in 10 minutes.

I plugged numbers.
lets suppose total no of candies in the box = 60
Danny ate 60 candies in 5 mins so danny's speed = 12 candies / minute
Ian ate 30 candies in 10 mins so Ian's speed = 3 candies / minute

Both can eat 15 candies in 1 min
so both (eating together) can empty the can in 60 / 15 = 4 mins.
