Hey...I have been engaged in my family business for the past 2 yrs and now I wanna go for a MBA. I am not very sure how can I present my family business experience while applying to B-schools and what are the kind of recommendations that I would need for the same?
Dear akankshaj,
Family business experience is valuable, but the key is in how you present it. Depending on your role and the business itself, your experience could be very interesting and add a unique perspective to the class. You cannot use a family member for your letters of recommendation, so that is where you will need to think a bit more broadly. If there are any non-family members who work in a managerial capacity, then that might be a possibility. Perhaps a client or vendor that you work closely with? Or a former supervisor or manager from a former company you worked with? If you do a little research on the many MBA-related forums out there, I know you will find some helpful tips on how to present your experience.
Good luck,
Lisa
