Low GMAT score

by bennyone » Tue Oct 05, 2010 8:26 am
Hi everybody,

I just passed the GMAT today and I scored 610 Q:46 V:28 which is far below what I expected since I scored 680 and 700 at the official practice tests...
I want to apply for the 1st round of the top-ten b-schools but do you think it is reasonable to submit my application with such a low score? I want to use the optional essay to say that I am planning to attend English courses and that I may repass the test to fulfill the school's requirements but I'm not sure it is enough to be acceptable. What do you think?

Thanks,
ben

With a 610 you will be 100 points below the average. You would need an overwhelming work profile or other advantage to break through. Top schools occasionally take applicants with low scores, but only if there is a compelling reason to do so. There are many fine schools that are happy to work with a promising applicant with a 610, but if you are determined to go to school next year don't focus excelusively on schools for which your score is out of range.

Depends on what kind of schools are you looking to apply to as well. If you are looking to apply to Top 20-30 US schools, this score will make it very difficult for you.

However, if you are applying to other MBA programs - you may still be able to go ahead and use this score. So in other words - totally depends on the your preference, choice and circumstance.
