Part Time or Free Lancing Job Status

by Ramneet Singh » Fri Nov 25, 2011 12:45 pm
Hi ,
I quit my job in 2010 not because of the layoffs but because i wanted to explore a few entrepreneurial ideas related to Import & Exports . I also pursued a course pertaining to the same field. However , I gave up after exploring the markets because of certain personal reasons . I did get an offer to work with a friend in Canada who launched his own venture in e-commerce in India .My friend will be in Canada whereas i will be in India managing the engineers .The problem is that the firm is still in the inception phase . We have been facing problems related to portal development . 1)The entire process has been taking place at a snail's pace . Except for my friend and myself , all other employees are contractual engineers .
2)The start-up is very small
3)The workers receive checks. We don't have salary slips . How do I show proof of Income . Since i am working with my friend , i didnt need an offer letter to start working with him

The last question that I have is :
Does the adcom look at Free lancing or part time employees unfavourably
I would be very grateful if you could help me out with these answers
Thanks

This is a tricky situation. Is this an incorporated company, or is it more like a part-time project that you have recently started working on? It is not that the adcom will outright reject any part-timers/freelancers, however you definitely have to justify why you are doing what you are doing. Are you a co-owner of the firm? What is the risk-reward scenario. If the company is not doing well, then why are you leaving for an MBA rather than rectifying the problems. Look, the adcom is always willing to listen to your story but in this case, you must give out clear reasons, for such a profile will ask a lot of questions.

Also look at how you will explain your Import-export forays. Did you leave your job before evaluating the market? And how strong were the reasons that made you quit the idea altogether.

To me, proof of income is not the main issue here. Lots of companies operate on negative revenues for a few years, the major issue is whether you can justify the choices that you made.

Good Luck!

Thanks Color Me One for the opinion .It is an Incorporated Company. I was involved full time . Just that a few applications have an option for part time and free lancing, hence the question .
In mY case , since we had an understanding at the beginning itself ,since i would go for an MBA , that i would help manage a few employees and help launch the website and get some experience working in a small start-up. Since the company has just been formed , we wont be having any revenues coming in for some time so i agreed to work without pay and would be getting a lumpsum when the business is up and running . I intend to rejoin after my MBA . How do I show proof of income . Should i show the offer letter . I have asked the college for a counselling session but i guess they have too many requests pending.

Ok, I think this can be justified. Just treat this as a full time position. Was there a written agreement on how much (what percentage) you would get when the company moves into positive revenues? The proof of income is not generally needed at the application stage, but I think you should ask your friend for the offer letter just in case.

Your first hurdle, though, is not the proofs. It is to justify your choices, making sure that you explain why you need an MBA when your firm is at such a crucial stage. Also how would things run while you are away.

I know that was not a question :), but I will have to differ. You have to give out the full story in your essays. If you already knew that you would leave for an MBA after the initial phase, and you know that you will rejoin, then you should also explain the whole plan including how the operations will run without you.

Maybe you are not exactly an entrepreneur, but your situation is akin to one.

Good Luck!
