Q-Johnsonville Golf Course has seen declining membership since the opening of a rival course across town a few years ago. The new golf course offers a clubhouse and changing rooms for its members, as well as brand-new, high-end equipment. Instead of investing primarily in landscaping as she had previously planned, the owner of Johnsonville Golf Course has decided that the best way to increase profits is to open a snack bar and add changing rooms.

Which of the following can be inferred from the information above?

A. The members of Johnsonville Golf Course care less about well-maintained grass than about changing rooms and a snack bar.

B. Johnsonville Golf Course has lost members to the rival course.

C. Johnsonville Golf Course doesn't provide high-end equipment for its members.

D. The owner of Johnsonville Golf Course will put no money into landscaping this year.

E. The owner of Johnsonville Golf Course thinks it is losing members because it lacks some of the facilities the rival course offers.

B is a straight away paraphrase of the first line of the argument.

IMO E.

The paragraph states the following:
=> Johnsonville Golf Course has seen declining membership since the opening of a rival course
=> The new golf course offers a clubhouse and changing rooms
=> owner has decided that the best way to increase profits is to open a snack bar and add changing rooms

B states 'Johnsonville Golf Course has lost members to the rival course' which is a very strong inference IMO. The paragraph does mention that there is a decline in menmberships, but they may be for other reasons as well.

Whereas E is similar to B in its inference but not as strong. The manager infers that the club 'may' be losing members dure to lack of facilities and hence would like to add them to increase profits. This IMO is inline with the premises we have above.

declining membership doesn't necessarily mean that the lost members are going to the rival course. It can be the case that the members just stopped playing golf all of a sudden! you never know! Hence, B cannot be the one.

the argument says that " Instead of investing primarily in landscaping", means that the investment will be reduced for sure. However, reduced to a level zero cannot be concluded. Hence, ta-ta D.

Only, E can be inferred based on the info given in the stimulus.

my dear friend "ANSUMANIA" . A says about members of johnsonville golf course it comprises of existing members also. we cant make inference about existing members, moreover it cud be possible that the lost members do care much about well maintained grass but the area of landscape is small in johnsonville golf course than the rival course.

Received a PM asking me to respond.

Read question stem first. This is an inference question. The correct answer will be something that must be true given some of the information in the argument.

Premise (fact): JGC membership has gone down for past few years, ever since other course opened nearby.
Premise (fact): New place offers (various good things)
Premise (fact?): JGC owner HAD planned to improve landscaping
Conc: owner: best way to increase profits is to (provide some of the same good things as the rival course)

A) Possibly. The owner presumably things so. MUST it actually be true though? No; the owner could be wrong.

B) Possibly. MUST it be true? No.

C) No idea. Therefore, doesn't have to be true.

D) Extreme. No.

E) Hmm. This is the best of the bunch. It's still on the weak side though - I could argue with it. For instance, the conclusion says that the owner wants to increase profits. Perhaps a snack bar has much higher profit margins than the other revenue-generating services and that's why the owner wants a snack bar.

I'd pick E. Wouldn't say I'm a fan of this question overall, though.
