Except for one class in history and one in biology, all the student's graduation requirements have been fulfilled.

(A) Except for one class in history and one in biology, all the student's graduation requirements have been fulfilled.
(B) Except for needing to take one class in history and one in biology, the student has fulfilled all of his requirements for graduation.
(C) The student has fulfilled all his graduation requirements except for one class in history and one in biology.
(D) Except for one history class and one biology class, the student has fulfilled all of his graduation requirements.
(E) Aside from the history class and biology class that he needs to take, the student's graduation requirements have all been fulfilled.

I am torn between C and D, but I would go for D.
The only reason I pick D over C is because of the missing word 'class' for the second subject, which makes the meaning of the sentence less clear than D.

IMO C

between C and D

except is used to modify requirements, so C is looking better.

This is a Kaplan800 problem.
I think only kaplan will be convinced with D :)

I read many other posts also for this question.
Everywhere I am seeing people more convinced with C rather than D.

Aha... I think i can explain this one...
It comes down to conciseness when you have to select between C and D..
Yes....its fine if you shorten the sentence... But if you shorten too much then you have to pay the penalty..
Prepositions other than of do now allow you to make the words too short...

Example..
History class -> wrong.
Class in history -> Correct..
Yes..you can say class of history but we do not have that option...

Boston soldier -> incorrect..
soldier from boston -> corretc..

Takeway: Do not shorten too much... Especially when you are dealing with prepositions...

Anyone feels that D has any modifier issue?

A modifier test

Except for one history class and one biology class.....is a NOUN modifier. It should modify students, and thus remain close to students

If it had been modifying REQUIREMENTS, both A and C would have been correct.
