percent question

the question comes from man gmat practice


6.4 is what percent of 16,000?

they have

What is 10% of 16,000? 1600
What is 1% of 16,000? 160
What is .1% of 16,000? 16
What is .01% of 16,000? 1.6

answer is = .04%.

For some reason I cant seen to figure out why its .04%

do I move the decimal two places right to get - 640 and then divide by 16000=.04%?

Just convert the words to an equation.

6.4 is what percent of 16,000?

6.4 = x% of 16,000.

For more comfort, convert to

6.4 = x/100 * 16,000

6.4 = x * 160

x = 6.4 / 160 OR 64/1600

Solving,

x = 1/25 = 0.04. Since x is a %, its 0.04%

(x/100) * 16000 = 6.4
(x/100)*16*1000 = 64/10
(x/100)*1000=4/10 (dividing by 16)
10x = 4/10
x=4/100
