A merchandise feedback a portal accords 'rating' to a product by recording the percentage of customers who have reported their views as either 'satisfied' or 'unsatisfied' only. The portal rounds off the exact percentage value calculated to the closest integral value. If the percentage of unsatisfied customers are recorded by the portal is 57%, what is the LEAST possible number of people that could have reported their views as 'satisfied'?

A. 2
B. 3
C. 12
D. 43
E. 57

The OA is B.

I'm confused with this PS question. Experts, any suggestion about how to solve it? Thanks in advance.

Hi LUANDATO,

We're told that A feedback portal accords a 'rating' to a product by recording the percentage of customers who have reported their views as either 'satisfied' or 'unsatisfied' only. The portal rounds off the exact percentage value calculated to the closest INTEGER percent. If the percentage of unsatisfied customers are recorded by the portal is 57%, we're asked what the LEAST possible number of people that could have reported their views as 'satisfied.' This question can be solved with knowledge of fractions.

To start, you would find it helpful (for the entire Quant section) to have certain fraction-to-decimal conversions memorized. Knowing that 1/7 = approximately 14.2% would make this question a LOT easier to deal with. Since...

1/7 = a little more than 14.2%
4/7 = a little more than 56.8% (rounded to 57%)
3/7 = about 43%

Thus, with 7 'voters', 4 voting 'satisfied' and 3 voting 'unsatisfied', we have the exact situation described... and the answer would be 3. The issue then is whether the number 2 could "fit" what we're told or not.

Can 2 divided by some integer equal about 43%...?
2/4 = 50%
2/5 = 40%
2/6 = 33.33333%

We can't get to a fraction that would round to 43%, so 2 cannot be the answer.

Final Answer: B

Since unsatisfied customers = 57%, satisfied customers = 43%. The difference is 14%. Recall that 1/7 ≈ 14%; thus, the least number of people surveyed is 7, with 4 being unsatisfied and 3 being satisfied. (Note: 4/7 = 0.57143 ≈ 57% and 3/7 = 0.42857 ≈ 43%.)

Answer: B

Since unsatisfied ≈ 57%, satisfied ≈ 43%.
The following ratio is implied:
(unsatisfied)/(satisfied) ≈ 57/43 ≈ 56/42 = 4/3.

The values in blue indicate that the least possible number of satisfied people = 3.

The correct answer is B.
