A fraction in reduced form is such that when its squared and then it numerator is increased by 25% and the denominator decreased to 80% it results in 5/8 th of the original fraction. The product of the numerator and denominator is:

A) 6
B) 8
C)10
D) 12

Let fraction be x/y
Squared, (x^2)/(y^2)
Numerator increased by 25%, 1.25(x^2)/(y^2)
Denominator decreased by 80%, 1.25(x^2)/0.2(y^2)

This is equal to, (5/8)(x/y)
Solving, (x/y) = (1/10)

Therefore, C

Dendude,

Your answer is right.

Just keep an eye out for the wording "denominator decreased to 80%" compared to "denominator decreased by 80%". Hence I posted this prob...

The fraction would be 2/5 so all u did is correct except 0.2(y^2) . It will be .8 y^2

cramya: Yes I see what you mean. I must've overlooked.
Strange, that I arrived at the answer with a 0.2 as well.
