About "having done" as a noun modifier

Carnivorous mammals can endure what would otherwise be lethal levels of body heat because they have a heat-exchange network which kept the brain from getting too hot.

(A) which kept
(B) that keeps
(C) which has kept
(D) that has been keeping
(E) having kept


This is a OG question. I hope it is not a banned source.

OA is B

Anyone can help me with choice E? Is "having done" incorrect because of the tense problem or just because "having done" can never be a none modifier? Hope anyone's reply.

Tense thing is wrong here for sure.

Though not sure if in general it is a wrong modifier.

well i think explanation of OG is quite good for this one
B

Correct. the verb keeps indicates a current
situation and is consistent with the other
verbs in the sentence. h e sentence is clear
and concise
and not E because

Having is awkward and imprecise; kept is
the wrong tense.

more over e will change the meaning and also sounds very awkward while reading

about having done thing this post may be helpful

Perfect Participle:

The perfect participle indicates completed action. You form the perfect participle by putting the present participle having in front of the past participle.

For example:-

Having done, having finished, having read, having spoken

It can be used to form the passive voice.

For example:-

Having improved her English Pia's promotion prospects were much better.

Option E indicates that "having kept" is a completed action. So, it is not correct.

I will have to double-check, but I am nearly certain "Having + past participle" will only be a noun modifier when that noun is the subject of a clause.
