suggestion for my job

hey lisa...first of all thanks ...you really doing a marvelous job....!!!!!!!

Now coming on to the point...I am a undergrad from india and i have completed my Engg.(I.T) from an above average college with 70%(we have%system here).Now about my activities i have participated in lots of inter& intra university level competition and won also.presented paper on various National conferences and i am National player of chess.

i have a teaching work ex of 1 year in a Engineering Institute and have Scored 720 in GMAT. What i need is your suggestion as you know INDIAN I.T pool is over represented i want your suggestion to choose my carrier .
Currently i have offer's from 2 TOP I.T MNC's .but then again i dont want to enter the field which can harm my MBA dream.

Can you please suggest what kind of job which can make me competitive for top 10 schools.I can also opt for banking, finance sector that wont be much difficult or continue with my current job and yes i am planning to take admission 2 or 3 year down the lane.

If you need more information do tell me but please help me out.. to present my self in a different way to schools.

Dear geet,

Congratulations on your two possible opportunities! That is a luxury for many these days. There is not a preferred industry or functional role in terms of business school admissions. The schools are looking for people that have excelled in their career and gained a depth/breadth of experience in their tenure. Thus you need to select the job that interests you more and/or offers more potential for you to gain quality experience. If you like your job, you will perform at a higher level.

Hi Lisa,


thanks for replying, but please can you clarify my doubt 1) tell me if i opt of I.T career then i will join the over represented INDIAN I.T male and as i have only 1 year experience as of now ( say 3 year when i will start may MBA) will it make me less competitive rather than if i opted for banking sector.

2) does MBA schools count teaching as a experience?

3) and last which is better for me To remain in this teaching job or To join IT company as a software engineer.

For me what matter is my MBA nothing else, i can opt any career which help me to make my dream come true.So please do guide me

Teaching experience does count if it was full-time, after you graduated with your bachelor's degree, and requires a degree to hold the job.

Only you can determine what the right job is to take from your current options. If you feel the IT job will give you greater opportunities to progress in your career, then it might be the better choice. Likewise, if that is the type of work that interests you, then it is the better choice. You should not be choosing jobs based on how you think the job choice might affect your business school applications in 2-3 years. While there is a large number of applicants with IT experience, the number of applicants from India is even greater. Thus you need to quit worrying about being in a subset of the applicant pool in the future and focus your energy on gaining some great experience in a job that you like now.
