View and think parallelism eliminates abc. No reason for two conditional verbs eliminates E.

Journalists view ... but think ... - parallel

Only D/E fits.
E - would or could - both are not necessary and wordy as well

IMO D.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Sam,

Could you elaborate : why both WOULD and COULD are not necessary?

Would and could - both are conditional modal verbs. Using both in E seems to mean more about possibility whereas D is about ability.

Usage of 'would' in D is wrong for two reasons

- We are using present tense in the sentence and 'would' is used with past tense.
- would 'be' is missing and not parallel to could 'be'
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Underneath is how I tackle the question:
1. Parallel structure: view (v) xxx but (v) xxx therefore, I eliminate(A), (B) and (C)
2. D or E.
(D) gramma is correct, meaning is clear because 'will be' talks about the future and 'could be' talks about a possibility
(E)gramma seems to correct but 'would' makes the sentence awkward & more likely happen in the past rather than in the future
Therefore, (D)is the correct answer.
