I will be taking my GMAT this Tuesday. For verbal questions, I write down A-E for each question before I start the section. It shouldn't take more than a second or two to write it during the exam for each question. But I am wondering if I can write on my scratch paper before I start the verbal section? Is that allowed? I don't think so. Once you are back after the break, the attendant would resume the test for you. If you opt for the break,you'll need to go out of the center. Just ask the attendant there,he/she might be able to tell you better.

I believe you can write on your notesheet while you are reading the instructions for each section. The instructions section is timed, meaning you can only spend a limited amount of time looking at it, but it doesn't count towards your actual section time.
I wouldn't write down all of your ABCDE's though, as it may be tough flipping back and forth with the notesheet during the exam.
