strengthen the claim

by Soumita Ghosh » Thu Jan 24, 2013 6:40 pm
In recovering from the broken bone in his foot, Mane Booney has only three options: he can wear a cast, have a screw implanted in his foot and wear a protective brace, or wear an inflexible medical boot. Having a screw implanted and wearing a protective brace will allow healing to occur faster than using a cast, but more importantly, it will allow him to train other parts of his body to keep relatively fit. It can be concluded then, that by deciding to have the screw surgically implanted, Booney will be taking the most effective step toward recovery.

Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the claim made in the argument above?

A.Wearing an inflexible medical boot in conjunction with a surgically implanted screw is detrimental to the healing process of broken bones.

B.Casts weaken muscle tissue around the affected area, which requires extensive and expensive physical therapy.

C.Inflexible medical boots allow the patient a moderate amount of mobility.

D.Booney is more concerned with a recovery process that will minimize the risk of the injury reoccurring than recovering in the shortest amount of time possible.

E.Booney can choose to have more than one screw implanted to further stabilize the bone as it heals.

OA A

I am confused with A and B that how to keep one of them and eliminate another of them.

I found A correct because in choice A it is given that Wearing an inflexible medical boot in conjunction with a surgically implanted screw is detrimental to the healing process of broken bones. So it strengthens the argument by saying no other option is as effective as Having a screw implanted and wearing a protective brace. So a having a screw implanted and wearing a protective brace is the most effective method that allows healing to occur faster.

I found B correct because in choice B it is said that Casts weaken muscle tissue around the affected area, which requires extensive and expensive physical therapy. So Casts cannot heal as effectively as having a screw implanted and wearing a protective brace. Therefore having a screw implanted and wearing a protective brace is the most effective method that allows healing to occur faster. Thus it strengthens the argument.

Can anyone explain me in detail how to eliminate one of them and keep the other.

Hi Soumita,

A very interesting doubt.

While choosing option B, you are correct that it undermines usage of casts as an effective medium to recover from broken bone and therefore, it should strengthen the argument.

However, if you see, it is already clearly mentioned in the passage that having a screw implanted heals faster than using a cast; in addition, screw implanted has some other benefits also. So, as far as use of both of these methods individually is concerned, the passage clearly states that an implanted screw is better. Therefore, option B doesn't add anything new. IT provides one more problem with casts. But we already know that implanted screws are better.

Hope this helps :)

Let me know if any further clarity is required.

Thanks,
Chiranjeev
