Can noun in modifier be referred with pronoun in main claus?

Can noun in modifier be referred with pronoun in main clause ?
Example
Rome was threatened by Hunnish troops which , led by Attila the Hun, demonstrated his military superiority.
Is ,which is absolutely necessary ?

Can you please post the complete question.. I believe "his" is incorrect.. "their" was correct usage.

Is the complete sentence, but I wanted to know whether his can be used instead of their if we don't have to about meaning change?
