Hi All,

Can some one please tell how to find out whether a "ing" form is acting as a gerund or a verb ?

Working overtime, John accompolished...
>> Here Working is verb.

Jogging is good for health.
>> Here Jogging is acting as noun.

Basically in a long complex sentence, how to find out whether a "ing" form is acting as a noun or verb.

That shouldn´t be a problem. Always look for the meaning of the sentence.
By the way. your sentence "Jogging is good for health", you can see that jogging is acting as a noun, as it is the subject of the sentence.

Gerund Identification

Easy way to think of a gerund is to ask if the word is being used as a noun or a verb. If the -ing word is used as the subject or object of a sentence (noun) then it's a gerund, as in "running is a fun way to exercise." Running in this sentence is the subject of the sentence and is used as a noun, and therefore is a gerund....
