I had some American friends who had trouble figuring out what they called "military time", meaning they had trouble transforming 22:30 = 10:30 pm. or 4:56 p.m. = 16:56. What you should know is that you always add 12 to the p.m. time. If you're looking to figure out the time for 5:55 p.m., then it's 5+12 = 17, or 17:55. Hope this is what you mean.
