Ambiguous pronoun reference...

by gmatrant » Sun Dec 16, 2012 2:25 am
Because the 2009 swine flu was caused by the H1N1 virus - the same strain of influenza that caused the massive flu pandemic of 1918 - researchers were convinced that it had the potential to kill many millions of people, particularly children and the elderly

In the above sentence what does 'it' pronoun refer to? Is there ambiguity in its reference?
A kudos or thanks would do great if my answer has helped you :)

Why can't 'it' refer to H1N1? I am a bit lost here, please explain?
