I say A>E but cannot point out the problem in E.
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

(A) They went to Africa, a continent with abundant resources, in the month of September. - Correct

(B) They went to Africa a continent with abundant resources in September. - Appositive (if not essential) must be separated by comma

(C) They had gone to Africa in the month of September, which is a continent with abundant resources.

(D) They went in September to Africa, a continent with abundant resources. - the position of "in September" is wrong here

(E) In September, they went to Africa, a continent with abundant resources. - Run on Sentence as the main clause "they went to Africa" is used as appositive and there is no verb in left structure.

E
I think this makes the sentence simpler and avoids the use of word "month" which is not exactly needed.

The correct answer is E - as this sentence removes the redundant "in the month of September" to "In September"
This is the only difference between this statement and A

E is right one

<< They went to Africa, a continent with abundant resources, in the month of September. >>

(A) They went to Africa, a continent with abundant resources, in the month of September.

(B) They went to Africa a continent with abundant resources in September.

(C) They had gone to Africa in the month of September, which is a continent with abundant resources.

(D) They went in September to Africa, a continent with abundant resources.

(E) In September, they went to Africa, a continent with abundant resources.

Option B is incorrect because it seems as if Africa has abundant resources only in the month of September.
Option C describes Africa as a continent.
Option D describes September as a mode of travel.
Option E and option A both are correct but option E is more concise.
