DS - Single Family Homes

by harsh.champ » Wed Feb 17, 2010 6:06 am
Of the 230 single-family homes built in City X last year, how many were occupied at the end of the year?

(1) Of all single-family homes in City X, 90 percent were occupied at the end of last year.
(2) A total of 7,200 single-family homes in City X were occupied at the end of last year.
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)

st. 1 90 percent were occupied at the end of last year. ----- not sufficient
st. 2 total of 7,200 single-family homes in City X were occupied at the end of last year not sufficient
combined
90/100 x7200 = 6480 ... not sufficient

if you know the number of single family homes that were occupied, and statement (1) lets us know that 7,200 equals 90 percent of the total number, wouldn't the answer be C? Please clarify

ok got ur point i.e. 90/100 x Total = 7200 --> total = 8000 . so there is total 8000 houses built...your point is correct.

But how would u calculate how many out of 230 (which were built last year) were occupied at the end of the year, Ans E

neither of the statements speak to NEW HOMES built... this is easily overlooked (as I did it at first)

Hey Guys,
I will post the soln. now.If still you have any doubts just let me know.
The term "Single Family Homes" is just to confuse you - In case you have any such doubts in the test just replace the term by lets say homes.
(1) is insufficient as we dont know the total no. of homes in the city(we only know the newly built homes)
(2)Still we dont know the occupancy % of newly built homes as compared to the total homes.
(1) AND (2) combined:- 90% occupied = 7200 =>total homes= 8000[This includes the 230 newly built and the 7770 that were built before the last year]
Still we dont know how many of these are the newly built ones.Hence E.
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)
