Retaking GMAT

Hi,

I have given GMAT twice in the last 6 months and need some guidance from the experts here. I scored 590 (V34/70% & Q38/44%) and 560 (V53% & Q41%) the second time. I used the OG 13th edition, the 2nd edition for Quant and Verbal.

I aimed to achieve 650 in the exam but that has not happened clearly. I am thinking of using the Veritas qustion bank and MCAT exams to improve the result and do more practise but I haven't bought them yet. Can the experts shed some light on how to improve the score? I see that MCAT exams are ranked the best so far on this forum but has anyone used their question bank as well? Please do suggest some other material if you think that can help or can be used in place of Veritas or MCAT.

Hi Ta,

It sounds like you've spent a great deal of time and effort focused on "book study" and you haven't achieved your score goal yet. You're probably used to "seeing" the GMAT in a certain way (the way that you taught yourself to see it), so doing more work in that same way probably won't help you to improve too much. You're probably going to need to invest in more of a Guided Self-Study product or Course to improve to 650+.

1) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
2) Have you scheduled another GMAT appointment? If so, then when is it?

Hi Rich,

Thanks for your reply, I wanted to apply in R2 of the B-Schools in the U.K but that is going to be missed now. R3 is in 1st week of Jan 15 and I haven't booked the 3rd exam. I did take an online course from GMATPrep which really helped me with the contents.

Hi Miransh,

Your game plan for a retake must begin with a close look at WHY your score is stuck in the 500s. There could be multiple reasons for this:
1. a problem with your fundamental concepts
2. issues in your approach to specific question types
3. timing issues
4. fatigue during the exam

Once you understand what is tripping you up - it could be a combination of these factors - you will know what you can do to address them. And this will ensure that you don't repeat the same mistakes next time.

Your next step should be assessing your weaknesses. To do this, take a look at your last few CATs and look at what type and topic you are getting wrong the most. Then focus on these topics, especially those that you are getting the easiest wrong and getting wrong because you didn't know the answer not for a silly mistake. I think in order to get your goal score, you will need to focus your study more and I agree with Rich that you will probably need to invest in either a course or comprehensive strategy guide set or at least the books for the topics you are having the most trouble with.
