Letter to the editor: The Senate recently voted to keep the estate tax, a levy imposed on the transfer of property of the estate of a deceased person to a living person or organization. The primary argument in favor of the estate tax is that it is a necessary component of a system of progressive taxation. Not only is this argument faulty, but the estate tax is also lousy for the economy. Primarily, the estate tax directly penalizes savings and investment, two activities that are vital to create and sustain jobs. Furthermore, the estate tax undermines a strong work ethic by devaluing the link between work and reward.

In the letter to the editor, the two sections in boldface play which of the following roles?

A The first is a fact in support of the author's position; the second is that position.

B The first is a consideration that the author argues is irrelevant; the second is a consideration in support of the author's argument.

C The first is an assumption that contradicts the author's position; the second is a premise in support of the author's position.

D The first is a conclusion that stands in opposition to the author's position; the second is the author's position.

E The first is a premise that clarifies the author's position; the second is a prediction that the author believes will hold true.

IMO D

The first boldface is the "Argument/Conclusion" of "others" and the author opposes this argument
The second boldface is the Conclusion of the author and then he goes on to justify it.

A The first is a fact in support of the author's position; the second is that position. The first is not a fact its a conclusion

B The first is a consideration that the author argues is irrelevant; the second is a consideration in support of the author's argument. the first might be a consideration but the author doesn't find it irrelevant ...he finds it relevant enough to oppose it

C The first is an assumption that contradicts the author's position; the second is a premise in support of the author's position. the first is not an assumption

D The first is a conclusion that stands in opposition to the author's position; the second is the author's position. Correct

E The first is a premise that clarifies the author's position; the second is a prediction that the author believes will hold true. the first is not a premise rathar a conclusion and it is in no way clarifying author's position. Rather, the author is against it

sure ...

there are two types of CR stems ...one is a fact sheet and the other is argument type...

fact sheet contains facts
argument types contain arguments

this one is an argument type because it has arguments

an argument follows this flow

Premise --> Conclusion (the arrow can contain the underlying assumptions)

Now looking at this CR stem look at what the different sentences are doing.

"The Senate recently voted to keep the estate tax, a levy imposed on the transfer of property of the estate of a deceased person to a living person or organization. The primary argument in favor of the estate tax is that it is a necessary component of a system of progressive taxation."

the first part is an argument ....The first sentence tells us about a premise which shows what the senate did . The second sentence is the actual position taken by the Senate .....now this is tricky ....we can call this the conclusion because the first is merely a fact but this second statement is the one that the author is trying to get at ....this is why he mentioned the first sentence .....

now lets look at the second part of the stem

"Not only is this argument faulty, but the estate tax is also lousy for the economy. "

The author has immediately stated his position .....he is coming out against the argument of the Senate and gives his position or conclusion .....what he says after this is to justify his position so what follows are premises not conclusion

Answer D seems to be logical one out of other answer choices
