Need Help for preparing GMAT study plan:

by divakar7 » Mon May 03, 2010 11:01 pm
I have taken a date for GMAT, its 05-Jul-2010.

Here is my situation

Currently i don't have a well defined plan to approach the GMAT. (studying pretty randomly, no fixed hours of daily study) I started with studying quant and completed couple of chapters, however my biggest weakness is to failing to review what i have studied. And I am focusing more on theory part in quant, when i study i feel pretty confident about the concept I learnt, however I stumble while solving problems.

Not sure how i can overcome this challenge. ( I know I need a plan and approach to study for GMAT, however not sure where and how to start it)

About Verbal I am doing good, need more practice - again no plan for this as well - just a random preparation.
I have taken a couple of practice tests and scored 480 , 460.
My Goal is to score 700+

In the summary :
My Weakest part on GMAT is : Quant ( Honestly I am worried, and a have lots of fear towards quant -lacking self confidence)
Verbal - I am good, need more practice

Please help!!!
Thanks and Regards
Divakar KN

Hi divakar,

Sorry to say this, but this is fact, there is nothing like a GMAT Study Plan which has been set already. GMAT Study Plan may guide you the way how others approached GMAT to get high score, that too once they have achieved then only people set it as an GMAT Study Plan.

In my opinion, If you have any new thing in your hands need to achieve like GMAT, then you can follow one of the below:
1. You can set your own study plan
2. You can approach/follow the plan that has been set by somebody.
3. You can set your own way by making some changes to study plan which somebody been achieved by using it.

So, I suggest you go through the posts which have experiences of people, then adopt one which best suits for you. The reason why I have suggested this is because the plan which we are following may not best suitable for you. But if you have such bunch of experiences of people, you may create one on your own.

Here is the link for it : https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/how-to-g ... n-the-gmat

I have done the same thing. So, now I have my own study plan which reflects the experiences of many people.

About confidence, just go through these 4 sayings:
1. "We first make our habits, and
then our habits make us." -- Ronald E. Osborn
2. "To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first." -- Shakespeare
3. "Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Willing is not enough; we must do" -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
4. "I never think of the future - it comes soon enough." -- Albert Einstein

I think after you go through the above sayings, you may felt with some good hope & happiness. So, I suggest you collect some bunch of this kind of inspirational quotes which builds confidence with in you. Anytime later if you feel to give up / end up anything(Eg. GMAT, some type of certification etc), then read all those quotes in such a way you can rebuild your confidence.

Hope this helps, GOOD LUCK, you can feel free to share your feedback,

Hope to hear from you again,

Thanks,
Rajesh

Received a PM asking me to respond. The above post from divakar is following on from a discussion we began in the comments section of this article:

https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/02/ ... study-plan

For anyone reading this, you may want to start with the above article. It describes how to develop a study plan tailored to your own goals, strengths, weaknesses, and timeframe. The conversation below will hopefully help you to see how one person (divakar) can use that info to develop a study plan.

Divakar, you gave your practice test scores as 480 and 460. Can you please give the quant and verbal breakdown? Also, read the following article and do the analysis described, then come back here and post what you discovered:

https://www.beatthegmat.com/a/2009/09/23 ... tice-tests

Did you take the tests under full official conditions? If not, please describe. Did you have any timing problems? If so, please describe.

Have you already purchased study materials? If so, what materials have you purchased? If not, do you know what you plan to purchase? Or do you need help with that? (The first article linked above does discuss this topic.)

What is your general schedule like? How often are you able to study? At what times of day?

Do you prefer to work on your own? Do you want to find a study group? Do you want to take a class?

Finally, you mention a test date of 5 July and a goal score of 700+. That is probably less time than most people would need in order to achieve that kind of score increase. I'm not saying you can't accomplish it, but most people would need more time. Just FYI.
Please note: I do not use the Private Messaging system! I will not see any PMs that you send to me!!
