The Achaemenid empire of Persia reached the Indus Valley in the fifth century B.C., bringing the Aramaic script with it, from which was derived both northern and southern Indian alphabets.

Could you please explain the trick here?

This is a tricky one :)

We can initially eliminate A, B since "with it the Aramaic script" is necessary as opposed to "Aramaic script with it"; if this weren't the case, the following clause would modify "it" instead of "Aramaic script," which is not correct.

Choice E can be eliminated since it is awkward and doesn't form a complete sentence. Now here's the real trick... I was initially leaning toward D, but this is a trap! Here's the question to ask.. "What derive(s) from the Aramaic script?" The answer is "northern and southern alphabets," which is a plural answer. This means that "derive" has to be used instead of "derives.

That would put us at choice C.
