Freewheeler

by xcusemeplz2009 » Sat Jun 13, 2009 10:53 pm
Fedora Convertibles began selling the Freewheeler – its newest convertible sports car – in May of this year. Fedora sent out a press release last month indicating that the Freewheeler’s sales for May, June, July, and August totaled over 50,000. As a result, Fedora will in all likelihood easily meet its stated sales goal of 120,000 for Freewheeler's first year of release.

Which of the following would be most useful in order to evaluate this prediction?

A)Fedora is the market leader in this category of automobile.

B)Freewheeler is significantly more expensive than similar models produced by Fedora’s competitors.

C)Fedora released a similar model in May of the previous year.

D)Sales of similar models of cars are typically much higher in the summer months than at any other time of the year.

E)Freewheeler sales are important to meeting the sales goals of Fedora as a company.

IMO D.

The question is asking us to find the statement which would help us to evaluate the prediction of Fedora. What is the prediction? For the months of May, June, July & August (4months) 50,000 sales are expected. As a result, they will easily meet their target of 120,000 sales for the first year of release, i.e. for the remaning 2 periods they will sell 70,000 cars. Only option D states a reason that allows us to evaluate the prediction.

Hope this helps.

IMO D. I used POE and arrived at D. The rest of the options don't seem to make much sense to evaluate the arguement.

I would use POE to solve this problem. We know the prediction is that Freewheeler will reach its sales goal of 120,000 within the first year of release.

A)Fedora is the market leader in this category of automobile.

This has nothing to do with whether the Freewheeler will meet its sales goal. Eliminate.

B)Freewheeler is significantly more expensive than similar models produced by Fedora’s competitors.

Also irrelevant since the prediction has nothing to do with Fedora's competitors. Eliminate.

C)Fedora released a similar model in May of the previous year.

This would only help if the similar model also met that sales goal, but that information is not given. Eliminate.

D)Sales of similar models of cars are typically much higher in the summer months than at any other time of the year.

Yes. From this we know that the sales in the summer are NOT indicative of the sales at other times of the year, so we could evaluate the prediction as likely false.

E)Freewheeler sales are important to meeting the sales goals of Fedora as a company.

Again, this is irrelevant to the prediction.

IMO D as well.

The main conclusion of the statement is that Fedora will in all likelihood easily meet its stated sales goal of 120,000 for Freewheeler's first year of release.

The purpose of this conclusion is stating its sales goal. Thus, to evaluate the statement we need information for/against the number of sales/or anything related to the sales of the car. A, C and E fail to do that promptly. B tells us it is more expensive, but does not state anything about whether it will help/hinder to achieve its goal.

Therefore the only remaining answer is (D)
