Question of the Day - 8th August, 2009

If the operation * is one of the four Arithmatic operation addition,Subtraction,Multiplication and division.Is (6*2)*4=6*(2*4)

A)3*2>3
B)3*1=3

IMO A
1) * can be multiplication or addition. In both cases,
SUFF

2) * can be multiplication or division.
not suff

IMO A

S1- * can be Multiplication or Addition - Either one the answer to the question is Yes. So Sufficient

S2-* can be Multiplication or division. - if multiplication answer to the question is Yes. If division No. So insufficient

Statement 1: 3 * 2 > 3

Check each operation.

Does * stand for addition?
3 + 2 > 5. Yes, it might be addition

Does * stand for subtraction?
3 - 2 < 5. No, it can't be subtraction

Multiplication?
3 x 2 > 3. Yes, it might be multiplication

Division?
3/2 < 3. No, it can't be division

So, * stands for either addition or multiplication
If * stands for addition, does (6 + 2) + 4 = 6 + (2 + 4)? Yes
If * stands for multiplication, does (6 x 2) x 4 = 6 x (2 x 4)? Yes
Since both cases yield the same answer to the target question (Yes), statement 1 is SUFFICIENT.


Statement 2: 3 * 1 = 3

Does * stand for addition?
3 + 1 does not equal 3. No, it can't be be addition

Does * stand for subtraction?
3 - 1 does not equal 3. No, it can't be subtraction

Multiplication?
3 x 1 = 3. Yes, it might be multiplication

Division?
3/1 = 3. Yes, it might be division

So, * stands for either multiplication or division

If * stands for multiplication, does (6 x 2) x 4 = 6 x (2 x 4)? Yes
If $ stands for division, does (6/2)/4 = 6/(2/4)? No

Since the answer to the target question can be either Yes or No, statement 2 is NOT SUFFICIENT.

Answer = A
