Say there are 100 employees; thus, 100 – 30 = 70 got either promotion or salary hike or both.

=> 70 = #promotion + #Salary_hike – Both
=> 70 = 40 + 50 – Both

Both = 20%

Since 20% is 40 (given), or double, there must be 100*2 = 200 employees.

Correct answer: D

Hope this helps!

Solution:

We can let x = the total number of employees and create the equation:

#(Total) = #(Promotion) + #(Salary Hike) - #(Both) + #(Neither)

x = 0.4x + 0.5x - 40 + 0.3x

x = 1.2x - 40

40 = 0.2x

200 = x
