by SaraLotfy » Thu Sep 19, 2013 9:16 am
Jim Broke's only source of income comes from his job as a question writer. Jim earns a flat fee of $200 a week plus $9 for every question he writes. Jim takes 2 weeks off per year. If a regular year consists of 52 weeks and the number of questions that Jim wrote in each of the past 5 years was an odd number greater than 20. Which of the following could be Jim's median annual income over the past 5 years?

A) 22,474
B) 25,673
C) 27,318
D) 28,423

This question is actually testing how we handle the "questions" wrote by JIM
For a Year, his fixed pay = 200*50 = 10,000

Now,
[A] = 22,474 - 10,000 = 12,474 --> Although, it is divisible by 9 but when divided it gives Quotient as "1386" which is not ODD--> ELIMINATE

(B) = 25,673 - 10,000 = 15,673 --> Not divisible by 9 ELIMINATE

[C] = 27,318 - 10,000 = 17,318 --> Not divisible by 9 ELIMINATE

[D] = 28,423 - 10,000 = 18,423

[E] = 31,227 - 10,000 = 11,227 --> Not divisible by 9 ELIMINATE

So, Answer
[D]
Hi SaraLotfy,

theCode's explanation is correct. Here is a quick way to determine if a number is evenly divisible by 9...

If the DIGITS of a number, when added up, result in a number that is divisible by 9, then the ORIGINAL number is divisible by 9

For example, Is 27 evenly divisible by 9?

2 + 7 = 9
9 is evenly divisible by 9, so 27 is evenly divisible by 9

Let's go bigger:

Is 828 evenly divisible by 9?

8 + 2 + 8 = 18
18 is evenly divisible by 9, so 828 is evenly divisible by 9

Using this tactic, you can quickly work through the answer choices and eliminate most of them.
