Patios

by crackgmat007 » Fri Aug 14, 2009 7:20 pm
50) Of 75 houses, 48 have a patio. How many houses have a swimming pool?
a. 38 houses have a patio but no swimming pool
b. Number of houses that have a patio and a swimming pool is equal to the number of houses that have neither pool nor patio

OA - C

I want to understand if we need to consider a new possibility offered by second statement while solving the first statement. In the above problem, ignoring stmt 2, we have all the information we want except 'Neither' details. Do we need to assume that 'Neither' is nil (which in some cases we assume so)? or looking at stmt 2, do we need to rule out that stmt 1 is insufficient?

Thoughts pls?

My thoughts, Might be wrong:

Considering a only:

75 Houses

48 patio (38 patio no pool, 10 patio + pool)

Not Sufficient.

Considering b only:

75 houses

# of Houses with patio and Pool = # No patio nor pool

Not Sufficient

Considering both:

75 Houses

48 patio (38 patio no pool, 10 patio + pool)

# of Houses with patio and Pool = # No patio nor pool

Statement A + B = 10 = 10

75 houses , 10 no pat and no pool, 10 pat + pool ,

55 mixed, 38 patio no pool, 17 patio no pool.

10 + 17 = Houses with pools.

Answer C: Both statements 1 and 2 together are sufficient to answer the question but neither statement is sufficient alone.

to answer your question:
we never "assume" that "neither" part is nil.
There is always something in the question that tells us whether the whole group participates or only a certain fraction of it.
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!
