There are two bars of gold-silver alloy

by netcaesar » Sun Sep 06, 2009 4:22 pm
There are two bars of gold-silver alloy; The first is 40% gold and 60% silver, the second is 30% gold and 70% silver. If both bars are melted into an 8 kg. bar that is 5 parts gold and 11 parts silver, what was the weight in kilograms of the first bar?

1st bar= x kg--> .40(x)=G, .60(x)=S

2nd bar= y kg--> .30(y)=G, .70(y)=S

x+y=8

.40(x)+.30(y)/.60(x)+.70(y)=5/11

1.4(x)=.2(y)

y=7x

8x=8

x=1 kg
