(A) New Jersey’s is one of the five highest number of reported
(B) New Jersey’s is one of the five highest numbers in reporting
(C) New Jersey has a report of one of the five highest numbers of
(D) New Jersey has one of the five highest numbers of reported

The rest have [b]numbers of[/b] which is incorrect i guess. Not sure about choice E as its truncated.

Edit:
I would go with E for the simple reason that numbers of is an incorrect usage.

IMO D

After the first read, it's evident that "New Jersey's" meant to indicate the no. of reported cases of Lyme disease in NJ. However, the sentence does not explicitly state so thus making it confusing.

Thus eliminate A & B & E.

Choice C -"has a report" seems awkward.

Thus choice D is the best choice.

The best amongst the above look to be D....but the problem with the above is "Numbers of" which has been straight away said to be wrong by Manhattan.... :-(....Can someone please explain....

Probably this might be the reason....One of the <Plural>...but I am not sure....

But there looks to be errors in other options too...

(A) New Jersey’s is one of the five highest number of reported
New Jersey has required.

(B) New Jersey’s is one of the five highest numbers in reporting
New Jersey has required.

(C) New Jersey has a report of one of the five highest numbers of
Changes meaning...it says New Jersey has a report rather then reported cases....

(D) New Jersey has one of the five highest numbers of reported
Looks to be the best.

(E) New Jersey reports one of the five highest number of
New Jersey cannot report. Also changes the meaning of the original sentence....

Following may help you: If it means "one number" number of is ok, but if the number varies, like here, all the years though one of the highest, it is not needed that the number will be same, numbers is ok...

goelmohit: "New Jersey reports" i think is a valid idiomatic expression. Very common in news form like india has reported...

Can you post the OA? Both, A and D were strong contenders for this one. I went with A though!
200 or 800. It don't matter no more.

The number of human that will be killed is not going to be one number, for example, it will not kill 100 humans only, it may kill 100 or 1000 or 100000, and so numbers is correct,

remember the rule: when the number may vary use numbers...

Thanks. Can you please tell why the "numbers of" wrong in the below question(OG-10, Q23). Can't here the number of women vary....it can be 500, 5000 or any other number....

Please tell what I am missing here.

Numbers of is almost always wrong on GMAT. Hence [D] is out of contention. Best suited IMO [spoiler][E][/spoiler]
