Hi. I'm a Mechanical Engineer for the Govt. of India and have a total of 5 years of work-experience.

Here's some info about my profile:

1. Worked at Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) for about 10 months.

2. Working for the govt. of India as a mechanical engineer. Area of focus on the design side/new product development for the Indian Army.

3. Level 1 candidate in the CFA program.

I'm going to apply to a few B-Schools this year. I want to make a career in a top automotive/Engineering and Operations firm post-MBA.

However, I'm not sure about various options I have. In fact, to be honest, I know nothing about the post-MBA career options in the industry of my choice. I don't know which areas to focus on if I want to work in the mentioned industry?

I'm personally interested in going for a profile which will set me up for a spot at the highest level of management in the automotive/Engineering and Operations industry. I intend to start at the new product development/project management side. I'm not sure which MBA majors should I opt for that match my interests. In fact, it's a weird situation. I have enrolled into the CFA program and even wrote the L1 exam the result for which will be out in a few days. However, now I feel I'm not sure how the CFA fits into my grand scheme of things. Should I even mention that in my application?

In short, I know where to reach and I also know that I need an MBA from a top institution for that. However, I'm not sure what path to take to get there and neither am I sure that my background will help me with my long-term goals.

Could someone please help me out with this?

First of all, you need to be articulate about your goal. In order to carve out a career path, you MUST have an idea about where do you see yourself in the next 5 years or so.

In order to know about career options in your industry, you will need to do research, and talk to people in your industry.

You need to research various schools to get an idea about their offerings .This will help you figure out which major you should opt for to go forward in your career.

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't mention CFA in your application. CFA will definitely equip you with skills that will help you accomplish your goal.

I hope it helped.

If you find my post helpful, please let me know by pushing the thank button.

Good luck,

I would say that the CFA probably won't help you out for the sort of goals you are aiming at. Automotive Operations. Sounds like a good start, and that you know more or less what you want. When looking at the type of jobs available or the specific position names, the best place to start is either company websites of linkedIn. There you can see where Automotive folks went immediately after their MBA, and what specific position they have.

Now, operations being a relatively standard section in MBA programs, and you can assume most MBAs will be able to provide for you. There are of course some MBA programs which have more famous Operations departments, such as Ross, Sloan, Tepper. So those may be good for you too (Apple's Tim Cook though went to Duke). So really in considering schools, any of the options are open to you, and I'd suggest just going to the best school you can get into.
