Advice needed.

by sj233 » Tue Dec 20, 2011 7:05 am
Hello everyone !

I am returning to the btg forums almost after six months. I need some advice. I gave my first attempt at GMAT on 20th July,2011.
Score- 700, AWA 5.0, Verbal 32, Quant 51. :(
( pasting the link to my earlier post, written just after the GMAT)

I need to retake the GMAT as my target score is 760+ .

Now, I am confused about when to retake the exam. :?
GMAT format changes in June 2012. I have a month off now to prepare for the GMAT and retake the exam in January end or I can study in June and retake the exam in July. Now, the main reason for my confusion is that if I retake the exam in its old format, then will the score be good for next 3-4 years ?
Or,to reframe the question, does giving the exam in July in its new format give me any added advantage over giving the exam in old format (without the new IR section) ?
One point to consider is that I will graduate in June 2012 and will apply for MBA in the top 5 institutes for class of 2015 and 2016. So, I want my score to be competitive for those applications ( I do not want to retake the exam more than once).

I am not able to decide on my own :? , so I would be very thankful for the advice of the fellow btg members.

Thanks in advance !

The only "advantage" to the new format is that b-schools will have less information data on what scores correlate with what performances in the program. Ultimately, if the school wants you, they will simply want a certain minimum score.

The Irish saying is "better the devil you know", which means that given the choice between two bad things, choose the one with which you are familiar, lest the other thing be worse. Looked at more pragmatically, all of your preparation so far has been "old format", so you may as well give that another chance. If that second chance doesn't go well, you can do the new format anyway.

Thank you Jim for your reply.

Agree with you on the advantage part. My only concern is that I don't want to give the GMAT (in new format) again after two years because the score in present format becomes somewhat irrelevant.
