Doctors hope that one day the body's master cells, called stem cells, can be directed to grow in organs or tissues appropriate for transplant, use them to test drugs and potentially toxic chemicals, and may study them to gain insight into basic human biology.
A. transplant, use them to test drugs and potentially toxic chemicals, and may study them
B. transplant, using them to test drugs and potentially toxic
chemicals, and studied.
C. Transplant, used to test drugs and potentially toxic chemicals,
and studied.
D. A transplant, use them for testing drugs and potentially toxic
chemicals, and for studying.
E. A transplant, used to test drugs and potentially toxic chemicals,
and may study them.

IMO is C

It keeps everything parallel:

can be -> directed + used + studied

IMO:C

A: usage of THEM : cells or "organs and tissues"
B: using them :--> "organs and tissues" :-- can organs be used to test drugs, I think author meant to say "cells will be used to test drugs and chemicals".
So it changes the meaning.

C: perfect parallelism:
can be directed
can be used
can be studied

Keeping the original meaning as well.

D: "can be directed to grow in organs or tissues appropriate for A transplant"

A indicates 'sigular' and making the transplant A SPECIFIC transplant.
but the intended meaning is general transplant.

E: out for same reason as above.

IMO D
since scientists are hoping that stem cells maybe used for..(future event), hence the sentence seems logical with use them FOR and ..For

here structure seems parallel with usage of FOR
waiting to know OA
