Finding the premise - going the other way round!!!

While price supports for dairy products will save jobs in the dairy industry, they will also endanger jobs in other food industries. Because price supports will make dairy products more expensive, families will spend a greater portion of their food budgets on dairy products.

The author's argument depends on which of the following premises?

A.Most consumers would not prefer lower-priced dairy products to other lower-priced food items.

B.If dairy price supports are implemented, there will be an increase in the number of jobs in the dairy industry.

C.Consumers would spend more money on other types of food if there were no dairy price supports.

D.If price supports for other food products were implemented, sales of those products would decline.

E.The quantity of dairy products sold will decrease if price supports are implemented.

B seems more plausible since families spent greater proportion of food budget on dairy products.

IMO: C

Let the consumer's expenditure per month be 100 rupees.
Let his expenses on dairy products be 25 per month and 75 on other food items.
If Price supports are implemented for dairy products and thereby making it expensive(40 rupees), he may have to
spend 40 rupees per month and hence has only 60rupees to spend on other food items..

So, had the price supports not been implemented, the consumer would spend more money than what he would if no price supports were implemented.

So I go with C..

any conflicts/suggestions?

Premise 3: (Because) price supports will make dairy products expensive

Conclusion : Families will spend greater portion of their food budgets on dairy products.

Since the Conclusion is based on Premise 3 we'll focus our attention on these two pieces.

A.Most consumers would not prefer lower-priced dairy products to other lower-priced food items.
Incorrect : It is stated in the premise that price supports will make dairy products expensive but based on that we cant assume that consumers would prefer lower priced food items to lower priced dairy products.

B.If dairy price supports are implemented, there will be an increase in the number of jobs in the dairy industry.
Incorrect : Jobs in dairy industry will be saved by price supports does not mean that there will be increase in the number of jobs.

C.Consumers would spend more money on other types of food if there were no dairy price supports.
Correct : This answer choice acts as a supporter and connects the elements in the last sentence.

D.If price supports for other food products were implemented, sales of those products would decline.
Incorrect : Price supports for other food products is completely irrelevant to the argument.

E.The quantity of dairy products sold will decrease if price supports are implemented.
Incorrect : Decline in sales of dairy products is out of scope
