Can someone please explain to me why if

x(x+2)=0

x = 0 or x = -2

thanks
Hi!

Let's start with a simpler equation:

x * y = 0

The only way to get a product of 0 is to multiply by 0. So, if the above equation is true, then either x=0 or y=0.

The same holds true for the equation you posted:

x(x+2) = 0

To get a product of 0, we must multiply by 0. Therefore, either:

x = 0 or x + 2 = 0

and, if x + 2 = 0, then x = -2

So, either x = 0 or x = -2
