by gmat20092009 » Sun Sep 06, 2009 5:01 am
After winning 50 percent of the first 20 games it played. Team A won all of the remaining games it played. What was the total number of games that Team A won?
(1) Team A played 25 games altogether
(2) Team A won 60 percent of all the games it played

If Pat saved $600 of his earnings last month, how much did Pat earn last month?

(1) Pat spent of his earnings last month for living expenses and saved of the remainder
(2) Of his earnings last month, Pat paid twice as much in taxes as he saved.

What is the probability that events A and B both occur?
(1) The probability that event A occurs is 0.8.
(2) The probability that event B occurs is 0.6.

(1) Team A played 25 games altogether
(2) Team A won 60 percent of all the games it played

Solution

Given data won - 10 games Total game played -20
also if total win is 10+x then total game played -20+x

st1 Total game played - 25 = 20+ x
therefore x is 5 Total game won 15.

st2 (20+x)60% = 10+x
Solve for x = 5

so correct answer is D

A
A (This question doesn't look complete... but from what I can assume the question says A should be enough to calculate total salary)
E (This has been discussed yesterday)

(1) Pat spent of his earnings last month for living expenses and saved of the remainder
(2) Of his earnings last month, Pat paid twice as much in taxes as he saved

Solution

Given Data Saving $600 , Earnings = ?

St 1 No data available

st2 From total earning he paid $1200 in taxes

But total earnings = Expenses + Tax paid + savings
Still no info about expenses.

So correct answer should be E

In statement 2, it states the team won 60 percent of all games they played...so technically couldnt they have played a 100 games and won 60 or played 200 games and won 120, making the statement not sufficient?

You are ignoring the information supplied in the question stem, i.e. the team won 50% of the first 20 games and all the remaining games. Hence, the team lost only 10 games and won all the others.

So, it is not possible that the team played a total of 100 games and won 60 because that means they lost 40 games which is contradictory to the question stem.

Let us assume the team played N more games.
Hence, the team own (10 + N) games and lost 10 games.
Hence, we need to find N.

Statement 1: N = (25 - 20) = 5

Sufficient

Statement 2: The team lost 40% of the all games it played, i.e 40% of (20 + N)
Hence, 40% of (20 + N) = 10
We can find N from the above equation.

Sufficient

The correct answer is D.

(1) Pat spent 1/2 of his earnings last month for living expenses and saved 1/3 of the remainder
(2) Of his earnings last month, Pat paid twice as much in taxes as he saved.
Statement 1 was missing those numbers.

Let us assume Pat earned $P in last month.

Statement 1: (P - P/2)/3 = 600
We can find P from the above equation.

Sufficient

Statement 2: We don't whether Pat had other expenses or not.

Not sufficient

The correct answer is A.

If A and B are dependent events, then P(A and B) = P(A)*P(B)
If they are independent events, then P(A and B) = P(A) + P(B)

As none of the statements, provide this basic information, both statements together is not sufficient.
