If x is 2 greater than y, then x + 5 is how much greater than y?

(C) 7

x is 2 greater than y & we want to know what is 5 greater than x in terms of y
so that is y + 7

x is 2 greater than y means x = y + 2

Now substitute the value of x in x + 5 ..

So, x + 5 = (y + 2)+5 => y + 7


Answer will be option C

We also have the non-algebraic option of picking numbers for x and y that meet the condition that x is 2 greater than y.

So, how about x=3 and y=1

"x + 5 is how much greater than y?" becomes
"3 + 5 is how much greater than 1?"
Or "8 is how much greater than 1?"

The answer is [spoiler]7 (C)[/spoiler]

I'd have done the same as Brent did only I'd have set y to zero.

Hence, x = 2 and (x + 5) = 7

Hence, (x + 5) is 7 greater than 0, i.e. y.
