prep question

Since applied scientific research is required for tech- nological advancement, many have rightly urged an increased emphasis in universities on applied research. But we must not give too little attention to basic research, even though it may have no foresee- able application, for tomorrow’s applied research will depend on the basic research of today. If the statements above are true, which of the following can be most reliably inferred?

(A) If future technological advancement is desired, basic research should receive greater
emphasis than applied research.
(B) If basic research is valued in universities, applied research should be given less emphasis than it currently has.
(C) If future technological advancement is desired, research should be limited to that with some
foreseeable application.
(D) If too little attention is given to basic research today, future technological advancement will be jeopardized.
(E) If technological advancement is given insufficient emphasis, basic research will also receive too little attention.

OA is D
can someone explain pls?

Position: currently applied research is required for tech- nological advancement.. but the passage cliams that basic research should also be given preference so that it wil aid applied research.

a -> says basic research should reveive more emphasis than applied research.. certainly not stated.
b -> talks about applied research being given less importance.. passage does not support this
c -> not given in passage
d -> correctly says that if too little attention is given to basics then technologica advancement will jeopardized.
e-> out of scope

Regards,
Vignesh

Since applied scientific research is required for tech- nological advancement,

Premise.

many have rightly urged an increased emphasis in universities on applied research.

Premise - this is not a conclusion, the author merely agrees with this fact.

But we must not give too little attention to basic research, even though it may have no foresee- able application,

Conclusion.

for tomorrow’s applied research will depend on the basic research of today.

Premise.

If the statements above are true, which of the following can be most reliably inferred?

We have learned that

1) Applied research --> tech advancement
2) Many support applied research in universities
3) Future applied research will depend on today's applied research, at least in part.
4) Based on this last premise, the authors concludes that while basic research may bear no fruit now, it still important for the future and should not be ignored.

(A) If future technological advancement is desired, basic research should receive greater emphasis than applied research. [This cannot be inferred. The argument says nothing about emphasising one type of research over another.]

(B) If basic research is valued in universities, applied research should be given less emphasis than it currently has. [Ditto.]

(C) If future technological advancement is desired, research should be limited to that with some foreseeable application. [This runs counter to what the argument says. The argument states that even though basic research has no forseeable application, such application may arise since applied research is based on basic research.]

(D) If too little attention is given to basic research today, future technological advancement will be jeopardized. [This can be concluded based on the permises of the argument.]

(E) If technological advancement is given insufficient emphasis, basic research will also receive too little attention. [This would imply that basic research is ONLY valuable to technological advancement. However, the argument does not state this. In fact, it seems that basic research is applicable to many areas, which makes it vague whether it will be useful to technological advancement which is dependent on applied research.]

I would go with option D as the correct option
