Archie’s gas tank

Archie's gas tank is 1/3 full. If Archie adds 3 gallons of gas to the tank, it will be ½ full. What is the capacity in gallons of Archie's tank?
A. 28
B. 20
C. 18
D. 16
E. 12

let gas tank's capacity be x;
x/3+3=x/2;
hence x/6=3; x=18 hence C

We can plug in the answers, which represent the capacity of the tank.
The fractions in the problem (1/3 and 1/2) indicate that the correct answer will be a multiple of 3 and 2.
Eliminate A, B and D.

Answer choice C: 18 gallons
1/3 full = 1/3 * 18 = 6.
3 gallons added = 6+3 = 9.
Gas/tank = 9/18 = 1/2. Success!

The correct answer is C.
