If both X & Y are non zero numbers, what is the value of Y/X ?

a) X=6
b) Y^2= X^2

Is the value of n closer to 50 than to 75 ?

a) 75-n>n-50
b) n>60

st(2) |x|=|y| Insuff
combined st(1&2): |6|=|6| Insuff

If both X & Y are non zero numbers, what is the value of Y/X ?

a) X=6
b) Y^2= X^2

(1) X = 6 but we do not know the value of Y, so there are so many possible values of Y/X. No definite answer; NOT sufficient.

(2) YÂ² = XÂ²
If Y = -1 and X = 1, then (-1)Â² = (1)Â² and Y/X = -1
If Y = 1 and X = 1, then (1)Â² = (1)Â² and Y/X = 1
No definite answer; NOT sufficient.

Combining (1) and (2), X = 6 implies XÂ² = 36.
Now, if Y = 6, then Y/X = 6/6 = 1
If Y = -6, then Y/X = -6/6 = -1
Again no definite answer; NOT sufficient.

The correct answer is E.

Is the value of n closer to 50 than to 75 ?

a) 75-n>n-50
b) n>60

(1) 75 - n > n - 50 implies 2n < 125 or n < 62.5. Clearly n is closer to 50 than 75; SUFFICIENT.

(2) n > 60
If n = 61, then n is closer to 50.
If n = 70, then n is closer to 75.
No definite answer; NOT sufficient.

The correct answer is A.

Problem 1:

(A) Clearly INSUFFICIENT because there is no info about Y
(B) Y can -X or +X so INSUFFICIENT

Combining
Y^2=36 implies Y=+6 or -6 so no definite answer

Therefore (E)

Problem 2:
(A) Don't solve. Think of Number line. SUFFICIENT
(B) If n = 61, then n is closer to 50.
If n = 70, then n is closer to 75.
No definite answer;INSUFFICIENT.

SO the answer Choice is (A)
